Greg Raymer Leaves PokerStars

News has broken off a shock departure from the PokerStars Pro ranks. 2004 World Series Main Event champion, Greg Raymer, has reportedly parted company with the world’s largest online poker site. There has been no official announcement from either player or company, but Raymer made a short statement on the popular poker form 2+2 confirming the news.

Since winning poker’s biggest prize in 2004, the player known to many as “Fossilman” has been a regular at poker tournaments around the world and at the best online poker tournaments on PokerStars. His name had become almost synonymous with the site, as have so many other former WSOP champs. The PokerStars Pro roster still includes Joe Hachem, Joe Cada, Jonathan Duhamel, Tom McEvoy, and Chris Moneymaker. All Main Event bracelet holders.

Raymer confirmed his departure on 2+2, but declined from revealing any details:

Canadian Wins $8.9 Million WSOP Main Event

If you require another reason to use a PokerStars marketing code, just consider the fact that this year’s Main Event winner was, once again, wearing PokerStars patches. Despite the fact that a large fraction of the 2010 final table was Full Tilt pros, the PokerStars pros beat the odds and won it in the end. Congrats to Jonathan Duhamel for winning the largest prize in poker by outlasting a huge field of talented players. When the final table formed, it consisted of pros that have had significant success on the top Texas Holdem sites.

Duhamel is the first Canadian to ever win the World Series of Poker Main Event. He is only 23 years old, and he left university in order to focus on playing poker once he discovered that he could make a great deal of money at it. He is mostly a cash game player, getting dealt at 18 tables of 6-max at a time. He said that he believes that being a cash player on download free poker sites aided him in his victory because he was highly experienced when it came to adapting to different preflop and postflop situations.

US Online Poker Still Thriving

For the past 8 years, the enjoyment of poker has swelled in the USA.
This can be largely attributed to the expansion of online poker and
television stations such as ESPN broadcasting the annual World Series
of Poker. Millions of Americans started playing online poker.

The legality of internet poker in America was unclear. But on
September 29, 2006, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of
2006 (UIGEA) was passed. This law made it illegal for online poker
destinations to transact with US banks. During this time, PartyPoker
was far and away the #1 poker website. However, on October 2, 2006,
PartyGaming, PartyPoker’s parent company announced that it would no
longer accept US players.

This caused ripples of concern to cascade through the poker community.
Would this be the end of online poker? Would everyone have to travel
to a brick and mortar casino just to play a game of Texas Holdem?
Various other established poker brands also announced that they would
