PokerStars World Cup of Poker Returns

PokerStars has long been credited as one of the most exciting money poker sites of all time. However, this has not stopped them from continuing to seek out new ways to satisfy existing players and attract new ones. If you have played poker for a while, you might know all about the World Cup of Poker.

The World Cup of Poker gives the average player a great chance to represent their country in a tournament versus other countries. People that love sandy destinations will be happy to hear that the big event takes place on Paradise Island during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA).

PokerStars named the World Cup of Poker after the prestigious soccer event of similar name. Each team has different positions that were inspired by the popular sport. There were four open spots on each team, and to receive one, a player had to download PokerStars and win an online qualifier outright. These qualifiers took place this past weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Players were able to compete for one of three positions that were open to everyone. The goalkeeper position was a freeroll. The defender position was a $1.10 buy-in. And then to receive the… READ MORE

$1 Million First Prize in Epic Poker League

The first Epic Poker League event is in the books as the four day MTT wrapped up in exciting fashion. The tournament took place on Vegas, started on August 9th and finished up on August 12th. It featured 137 entries at $20,000 a pop with $400k donated to the prize pool by the league itself. When everything was said and done, first place was an incredible $1 million. If you like online casino gambling, $1 million could go a very long way!

The final table was unsurprisingly tough with an incredible 16 WSOP bracelets amongst the players. Two of the hottest players in the world were at this final table: Jason Mercier (a pro of the PokerStars download) and Erik Seidel. Mercier has had an incredible amount of success in live tournaments for a few years now. It can be argued, though, that Seidel is having one of the most impressive years of tournaments the poker world has ever seen. Before the final table Seidel was up a whopping $5 million on the year with four outright wins and two scores over $1 million.

The four other members of the final table were Main Event winner Huck Seed,… READ MORE

British Columbia Poker Championships 2011

One of the biggest yearly tournament series in Canada in the past few years has been the British Columbia Poker Championships, commonly referred to as the BCPC. The BCPC has been around since 2005 and is hosted by the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond British Columbia.

The Main Event was won back in 2008 by Daniel Negreanu for $371,910. That was the year the PokerStars download ran satellites to the big tourney, and quite a few poker professionals showed up for it.

Since 2008 the series hasn’t grown in popularity, but it still gets a great field. This year PlayNow.com (the download free poker site for British Columbia) will probably run satellites to it.

Between October 25th and November 9th there will be four events. The first event of the series is a bounty event, costing $550 to enter and featuring a maximum field of 528. It has an estimated prize pool of $237,600. This is a four day event, with the final table scheduled for October 28th.

Following the $550 will be a $1,100 No Limit Hold’em Event with 550 maximum players with alternates and an estimated prize pool of $550,000. This event is scheduled for… READ MORE

The Epic Poker League

Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas, one of the most popular casinos for USA players, had the pleasure of hosting the first Epic Poker League Main Event. Prior to the Main Event was a $1,500 Pro/Amateur tourney that saw 190 people enter. Those that finished in the top 9 gained entry into the Main Event.

On top of that another 128 pros put up the $20,000 entry fee, which set the final field at 137 players. The total prize pool was $3,085,200 when it was all said and done since $400,000 was added to it.

The field was, of course, filled with a staggering number of tough pros as per the goal of Epic Poker League. Many of the online poker best came out, as well as many live pros. Since the event had a 6-max format, it was guaranteed to be an extremely exciting event.

The blinds started at 100/200 and the starting stacks were 50,000. People had plenty of time to build their stacks with 90 minute levels. There was a lot to play for since 1st place awarded an astounding $1,000,000.

The event was not supported by everyone, though. Daniel Negreanu publicly explained in his… READ MORE

Full Tilt Pay Overdue £250,000 Licensing Fee

On June 29th, The Alderney Gambling Control Commission elected to suspend the gambling license of Full Tilt Poker. Following the events surrounding Black Friday, the small island decided that FT could not be trusted to operate safely and securely. Since then, nobody has been able to play online poker at Full Tilt, while competitors like the PokerStars Download establish themselves as big players in the rest of the world.

During a hearing convened a month later, it was revealed that Full Tilt owed the AGCC some £250,000 in unpaid licensing fees. The company’s lawyers protested that their masters did not pay because they knew the license would no longer be in effect. Beyond that, the hearing was conducted in private and the press were only ushered back in at the end of the day to be told that proceedings had been adjourned until a date no later than September 15th.

Full Tilt Poker have now paid the missing £250k, setting themselves up for a renewal of the suspended license. Although this is only a minor stumbling block, there was no chance of them having their operating agreement ratified without the AGCC taking the cash on board. Both players and… READ MORE

Portuguese Poker Prodigy Admits to Scandal

Poker players have made several indiscretions since Black Friday as the online poker best have been in a state of disruption and change. Turmoil and drama has been rampant, and stories of unethical situations have unfortunately surfaced as a result. A good example of all of the above is the story of Jose “Girah” Macedo.

Macedo received the spotlight thanks to a claim that he went from being extremely poor to an online millionaire in no time at all. Dubbed the Portuguese Poker Prodigy, he allegedly used a single €30 deposit and went from $0.10/$0.25 No Limit Hold’em cash games all the way up to $100/$200 No Limit Hold’em. It was an impressive story indeed, and both Daniel “jungleman” Cates and Haseeb “DogIsHead” Qureshi had only good things to say about him and his game.

Apparently due to lawyer instruction, Macedo wasn’t willing to tell anyone the screen names he used in online poker rooms. This didn’t cause him many problems, however, because a few high stakes players said they would bet thousands of dollars with anyone who was skeptical of Macedo’s story.

Soon Macedo was made a Lock Poker Pro, but this is where things get… READ MORE

PokerStars VIP Requirements 1/10 the Usual in August

The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is less than a month away, and PokerStars has rolled out yet another excellent promotion called the VIP Club Mega Month. It will enable players to have a much better shot at gaining entry to the big buy-in WCOOP tournaments.

VIP Mega Month means that August has become awesome because now it will take just 10% of the normal VIP Player Points (VPP) requirement to get SilverStar status and up. PokerStars already has one of the best VIP programs of all the money poker sites, and now they have made it easy for players of all bankrolls to take advantage of the perks.

To earn SilverStar status it usually takes 750 VPPs, but this month it will only take 75 VPPs. Then it’s 300 VPPs for GoldStar (rather than 3,000) and 750 VPPs to get PlatinumStar (rather than 7,500). Or we can look at it in terms of rake required. You need to spend a mere $14 in tournament fees to achieve SilverStar, and you have to pay $140 total to get PlatinumStar.

Becoming a PlatinumStar gives players a chance to earn a huge number of frequent player points (FPP). When a… READ MORE

Secondary License Renewed by Full Tilt Poker

If you are a fan of online poker rooms, chances are you know of the ongoing licensing problems of Full Tilt Poker. This past Friday the Kahnawake Gaming Commission gave the site a renewal of their Secondary Client Provider Authorization for a term of two years.

Many poker players were confused upon hearing that Full Tilt Poker was licensed at all by Kahnawake. Kahnawake is the same commission that licenses Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker, the home of several scandals. These sites were once a couple of the best Mac poker sites available, but they were hit hard by the loss of American business since Black Friday. This is, of course, something they have in common with Full Tilt.

It should be noted that while Full Tilt’s secondary license is valid, they must attend a hearing with the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) in order to get their primary license reinstated. Paraphrasing the Alderney Commission’s website, they are looking for their hearing with Full Tilt to occur as soon as possible and no later than September 15th.

Full Tilt was able to renew their secondary license despite their primary license suspension because their primary license is still technically… READ MORE

Epic Poker League to Show 20 Hours on TV

Even after the trouble a few of the US poker sites have gone through, Americans are still very interested in the game. This is demonstrated in the excitement people have over the Epic Poker League, which was put together by Annie Duke and former World Series of Poker commissioner Jeffrey Pollack.

Epic Poker League was designed to allow established professional poker players to go head-to-head with each other. They have measured the top tournament players in the world using their new Global Poker Index. Using the Index, they picked out the best 200 players in the world (according to them). So how will Epic Poker League show the games between these players? It just so happens that they recently locked up a platform, too.

The League was able to strike up a deal with two TV networks: CBS and Velocity (a new network created by Discovery). These deals mean that 20 hours of Epic Poker League will be broadcast, with 7 hours on CBS and 13 hours on Velocity.

Pat O’Brien and Ali Nejad will be the on-air voices of the TV shows. O’Brien spent 16 years handling various events for CBS Sports including the Super Bowl, World Series,… READ MORE
